Selected photocopies are from "Letters Descriptive of The Virginia Springs - the Roads Leading Thereto; and the Doings Thereat - 1834-1836. These letters describe life at the spa and describe the bathing outfit, amusements such as the ten-pin alley, walks, horses, the coaches to transport, the diseases the waters "cured". The buildings are pictured in detail with ballrooms, springhouses and lodging facilities. The food was delicious, music excellent, staff accommodating. The society at all levels was important. Frolic and fun was the order of the day. In comparing the activities here and at the Yellow Springs Spa, one will find many similarities. All the spas appear to have the same general atmosphere and it was expected as one traveled from spa to spa. Also included is an excellent bibliography for springs. |
