"Mineral Springs In the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania: A Field Study" discusses the field work done to locate the spas and springs in Pennsylvania. The Yellow Springs Spa is included. Using the survey, water samples, lab examinations and evaluations, Doctors Kornblueh and Piersol comment on the 29 spas identified over the past 200 years. Tables of these springs are shown and a lengthy reference list provides information for further research. The discovery of Radon in water is discussed and it was the hope of these doctors that a new interest in balneotheraphy would develop. "Spas and Mineral Springs of Philadelphia and Vicinity" gives a medico-historical perspective to the subject. The Yellow Springs Spa is discussed in historical detail. Various spas and springs in the Philadelphia area are mentioned although they no longer exist. The authors of this article believe that past generations were right in believing that natural means of treatment with sound diversion (relaxation and entertainment) was a good thing. A bibliography lists further research sources. "The Vanishing Spas of Pennsylvania (An Historical Review)" discusses the popularity of spas that flourished during the Colonial days and the approval and support of the medical profession at that time. The Yellow Springs Spa is discussed. The physicians writing this article lament the decline of the spa based on new medical knowledge, industrializatin of the state, growth of cities and the location of railroads and highways. They also blame owners for not modernizing their establishments. In their day, spas were a significant part of social life closely associated with political and historical importance and influenced medical thought. A map locates the spas and descriptions of each are given along with the chemical makeup of the waters. A lengthy reference list provides further research. Also included is a picture of the Bedford Springs Hotel in Bedford County. Several articles about Bedford Springs are included. |
